Discovering Salzburg: Austria’s Timeless Jewel

For fans of The Sound of Music, Salzburg needs no introduction. Situated along the banks of the Salzach River, this enchanting Austrian city is where the beloved Hollywood classic was filmed — a place that continues to capture the hearts of travelers from around the world. However, the city’s appeal goes far beyond its cinematic legacy.

Mozart and Music Everywhere

Salzburg is also the birthplace of the legendary composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – one of the most celebrated composers in Western music history. You can feel his spirit everywhere — in the street musicians, the cozy cafés playing classical tunes, and even the Mozartkugel – the chocolates named after him (which by the way are the most delicious chocolates ever!)

A City Named for Salt

Interestingly, the city’s name tells a story of its own — Salz meaning salt, and Burg meaning fortress or city in German. Centuries ago, salt barges sailing down the Salzach River had to pay a toll to continue their journey, giving Salzburg both its name and its early prosperity. Even today, the surrounding region remains famous for its ancient salt mines — a reminder of the city’s rich heritage.

Salzburg has this perfect mix of music, history, and fairytale beauty. Salzburg is one of Austria’s most beautiful cities with breathtaking Alpine views.

If you are planning a trip to the city, here’s a guide to the best things to see in Salzburg for every type of traveler.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Perched on a hill overlooking the city, Hohensalzburg is one of Europe’s largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses. You can explore the castle rooms, museums, and even the torture chambers at a price. Some of the rooms are free to visit, but the paid attractions are worth the buck. The fortress offers sweeping views of Salzburg city and the Alps. It is an easy hike up the hill with proper steps or one can take the funicular which costs around €14 to reach the top.
