Top Child-Friendly Treks Near Pune

Pune, situated amidst the majestic Sahyadri mountain range and boasting an illustrious history, is home to several mountains and forts that are ideal for trekking enthusiasts. With its lush green valleys and diverse flora and fauna, the region offers an enchanting backdrop that captivates adventurers of all levels.

Although the majority of mountains are strenuous and will test your endurance, challenging both the body and the spirit, a few are easy climbs and great for introducing young children to the delights of climbing up a mountain while they learn about history en route.

These family-friendly trails not only make for enjoyable excursions but also serve as opportunities for parents to bond with their children, sharing stories of the forts’ historical significance and the legendary battles that took place there. As trekkers ascend, they are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, which further enrich the experience and deepen their appreciation for the area’s cultural heritage.

The post-monsoon season, around the month of September, is an ideal time to plan treks, as the rain has subsided, the weather is still pleasant, and nature is in its full glory.

Although all these treks are family-friendly and can be done by everyone, take your children along for a hike only if you have some experience in trekking.

Tikona

I introduced my daughter to trekking with Tikona fort as it is a relatively easy climb (except Balle Killa where the steps are steep) and is close to Pune city. The ascent offers breathtaking views of the surrounding areas and allows one to even see other forts, such as Tung.

It takes around an hour to reach the top and there are several rest stops on the way run by local villagers. They serve food and refreshing drinks like lemonade and cold drinks and some even have light snacks to offer. There is a water tank and a temple on the way to the top and children will enjoy exploring the fort.

Malhargad

A little-known fort, Malhargad is a short, super easy climb. It is on the way from Pune to Saswad via Dive Ghat. There is a gravel road that goes to the parking area or one can park at the foot of the mountain and climb. As the fort is not a major tourist attraction, there are limited signboards. Children will love running around the vast expanse although some areas along the ramparts do not have fencing. The views of the Pune and Saswad areas are breathtaking.

Rohida or Vichitragad

One of the important forts of the Maratha empire with a rich historical legacy, climbing Rohida can be a little deceptive as with every small climb, one feels they have reached the top. The trek is moderate with a gradual ascent but can be a bit tiring. The climb is worth every sweat as it provides breathtaking views of the region, along with several cascading waterfalls. There are many spots to take a break and take in the beauty. However, there were no food stalls on the way up when we went so ensure you carry enough food and water along.

Korigad

A popular destination for trekking enthusiasts, Korigad is a historic hill fort near Lonavala.
An easy to moderate hike, it takes around 30-40 minutes to reach the top, depending on the walking speed. The fort offers scenic views of the surrounding valleys and the Aamby Valley city. Carry your snacks and water bottle as there are no eateries in the vicinity of the fort.
